"SPOOKY" Puff The Magic Dragon

Among the most deadly weapons used in Vietnam was an improbable looking contraption called Puff The Magic Dragon. A reconditioned US Air Force C-47 cargo plane, Puff owes its name to the fact that its three Gatling style machine guns lined up on one side of the plane can spit tracer bullets into the night sky at the incredible rate of 450 rounds per second.

Apparently, to both friends and the enemy, the fire from the eighteen barrels and the tracer rounds reaching to the ground looked like a "dragon's breath." That fiery breath and the loud roar of the guns led to the name, "Puff The Magic Dragon."
